The British government has once again come under fire. It’s been revealed that the security services have created bulk personal datasets that contain items of personal information. Some of them have been gathered without legal accountability. The report also suggests the laws governing the work of intelligence agencies were unnecessarily complicated.
The disclosure came in a report by parliament’s intelligence and security committee or the ISC examining the oversight and capabilities of the UK intelligence agencies in the wake of the revelations made by Edward Snowden.
While the committee has laid out some reforms which have been called significant, some critics are still concerned about whether these reforms will have any real impact. Mistrust of the UK’s intelligence agencies still remain after they have on more than one occasion been found to be acting illegally.
David Cameron has announced that oversight of the use of the data sets will now be put on a statutory footing.
