Russia defies US, EU sanctions against its arms conglomerate

Russia has sent multi-million dollar civilian and hardware equipment to South Sudan via Uganda. The move is seen as Moscow’s defiance of US and EU sanctions that were imposed against one of its conglomerates. US and EU had accused the Russian company of intervening in South Sudan using Uganda as an ally of Moscow.

Russia's contribution of 67 Kamaz trucks to the United Nations World Food Program is aimed at assisting in distributions and deliveries of aid in Uganda and throughout the East and Central Africa.

The sturdy trucks accompanied by mobile workshops and technicians are expected to form part of a regional fleet based in Uganda and serve WFP operations with 53 of them flagged off to South Sudan to help in the dire humanitarian situation there.

According to analysts, the Russian influence continues to suppress the US dominance over African affairs as Uganda takes stand to defend Moscow’s intervention in protecting the lives of innocent civilians dying due to the lack of humanitarian assistance in Africa.

Moscow has also pledged Uganda in supplying military arms when the country needed.

Uganda recently awarded a controversial 4 billion-dollar oil refinery project to the subsidiary of a Russian state conglomerate with a heavy presence in the arms industry whose chief executive is under the US and EU sanctions.

According to political analysts, Russian Africa intervention cements growing ties between Moscow and the east African country, which increasingly characterizes the west as a neocolonial aggressor.
