A man believed to be one of the leaders of a gang accused of robbery and raping a 75-year-old nun in India has been arrested.
Police said the 28-year-old Bangladeshi man, identified as Nazrul Haque, was apprehended in a railway station in Kolkata late on Wednesday evening.
Police added that the ringleader had been on the run after he was spotted by police at his hideout on the border between India and Bangladesh.
Police said two more suspects still remain at large.
In March, the gang of thieves attacked the Jesus and Mary convent school and church in Ranagaht in Nadia district of West Bengal. A senior nun, who tried to stop the robbery, was assaulted and raped before the gang fled with the funds set aside for renovation work in the convent school.
The incident caused public anger, with large numbers of angry students, their parents, and teachers calling for the arrest of the thieves.
India has a history of sex violence cases. In an incident in 2012, a 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped aboard a moving bus in New Delhi, sparking mass protests throughout the country.
