The UK government has been warned to take drastic action to counter the consequences of climate change.
The Committee on Climate Change has said that MPs and government ministers should unite to take action to halt the effects of climate change, particularly the threat of flooding and heat waves that could alter the long term state of the country. The committee has urged the government to stay on track with its objectives to counter the effects of climate change.
Chairman of the committee, Lord Krebs has said "By the 2050s the sort of heat waves we might experience in the next few days will be the norm, a typical summer…just as we've been encouraging on the mitigation side retrofit of loft insulation and so on, we need to think how to develop passive cooling measures maybe tinted glass, shading, again as is common in other countries”.
But the Department of Energy and Climate Change has said that the government is already focused on honouring its climate change targets, describing the Tory government as “a green government that cares about the environment.”
“We have already made great strides to that goal, with emissions down 30% since 1990…there's still much work to do and we will continue to power our move to a low-carbon economy at best value to consumers,” said a Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesperson.
Meanwhile, former Shell chairman Lord Oxburgh of Liverpool said the government has lost some of its moral authority on the issue of climate change and that more needs to be done to regain it.
"Ministers need to come forward very soon with coherent policies on energy efficiency, low-carbon transport, renewable heat and renewable electricity, otherwise the UK will fall behind other nations and lose its moral authority on the international stage,” he said.
The Tory government courted controversy and anger among many campaigners and green experts by abandoning the use of onshore wind turbines, which is the cheapest method of utilizing green energy.
The government still insists that it is on target to meet the climate change goal, which is to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050.
