The Egyptian capital of Cairo has been hit by a couple of blasts that were set off near a police station in the October 6 City neighborhood, killing at least three individuals, the Health Ministry has announced.

The incident occurred Tuesday when two explosive devices hidden inside a vehicle detonated next to the Nakheel shopping center near the October 6 police station, local media outlets cited Egypt’s Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar as saying.

Three more people were also injured in the blasts, added the ministry as quoted by the official MENA news agency, which further cited eye witness accounts as saying that the vehicle was on its way to the police station, nearly a kilometer from the shopping center.

It did not, however, elaborate on how the witnesses determined the car was heading to the police station.

The development came just a day after Egypt’s state prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, was killed following a car bomb attack targeting his convoy near a Cairo military academy in the Heliopolis district.

After the fatal bombing, Abel-Fattah al-Sisi, the Egyptian president and former army chief, vowed earlier on Tuesday to take tough measures for the rapid implementation of “justice”.

"The arm of justice is chained by the law. We're not going to wait for this. We're going to amend the law to allow us to implement justice as soon as possible," said Sisi during a televised address.

The deadly bombing came after an ISIL-linked terrorist group in the country called for attacks on Egypt’s judiciary, which has passed down hundreds of mass execution verdicts in recent months against the supporters of the first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted in a military coup in July 2013 led by Sisi, the then-army chief.

Since then security across the Arab nation has dramatically deteriorated with intermittent attacks on police and military targets.
