A far-right protest in the British capital against the ‘Jewification’ of the United Kingdom is met with a counter rally.
The protesters were demonstrating against a Jewish neighbourhood watch group called Shomrim when counter-protesters followed them chanting “scum” across the Westminster area in London.
The demonstration, which was initially planned to be held in the majority Jewish area of Golders Green in North London, was met with hundreds of rival protesters who reportedly drowned out the right group’s planned speeches with a number of chants.
The Metropolitan police imposed conditions upon the far-right protesters under the Public Order Act 1986 after revelations of their plans to privately film themselves burning copies of the book of Jewish law, the Talmud, as well as effigies to be posted onto social media later.
Officers say although they had no legal powers to prohibit the static protest from taking place, the Metropolitan police were able to limit it to just one hour long over fears of imposing unreasonable restrictions on their right to protest.
Groups that showed up to stop the anti-jewification protest included United Against Fascism, the Green Party, the Socialist Workers Party and left-wing Jewish group, Jewdas.
Officers say they were prepared for the planned protest in Westminster and acted swiftly to remove them from the area. They were escorted by police officers onto a train where they were let go.
