Translators will be shortlisted for Man Booker Prize, the world’s most celebrated international literary prize, for the first time from 2016.

Since the translators’ exertions are not generally considered for international literary awards, Man Booker has decided to award its £52,000 prize to both translators and authors, in a bid to praise the righteous position of translators.

Man Booker prize had previously been awarded to the whole translated works of a writer, but from 2016, the focus of the award is planned to be on a ‘single’ translated book, splitting the prize equally between the author and translator of the winning book.

According to Daily Telegraph, the Man Booker’s new policy aims at giving the righteous recognition to the work of translators, and reminding the significance of their expertise.

In the administrator of the prize words, Fiammetta Roccos, “Translators and authors feel very much that it’s a partnership, bringing a book into a new language. I don’t think I’ve ever heard an author say, ‘It’s mine, therefore I should get most of the money.’ Their dream is that translators should be better supported.”

Emphasizing the indisputable role of prosperous translation, Roccos also remarked that the works of non-English writers, for instance, the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson and the Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgard, enjoyed the triumph when their literary works were translated into English.

Man Booker is set to be merged with independent literary awards for non-English books for the upcoming year. The organizers believe that this new approach would cause the efflorescence of fiction, due to the fact that merely 5 percent of the sold fictions in Britain are translations from the original language.

The Man Booker Prize for Fiction is one of the greatest literary prizes in the world, which is annually awarded to the best original novel, written in English, and published in Great Britain.
