A powerful landmine explosion has killed two family members and injured some others in the troubled east-central region of Afghanistan, officials say.

Local Afghan officials said on Tuesday that the incident took place in Sayed Abad District of Maidan Wardak Province on Monday afternoon.

Hayatullah Hayat, the provincial governor of Maidan Wardak, noted that the deadly attack also wounded two other members of the family.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Suspected Taliban militants frequently plant mines to target Afghan and foreign forces in various parts of Afghanistan.

Dozens of people have been killed in a series of attacks by the Taliban militants over the past 48 hours.

More than two dozen people, including senior local government officials, sustained injuries when a bomb explosion ripped through a mosque in Afghanistan’s northern province of Baghlan on Monday.

At least 30 civilians were killed and sixteen more wounded in a car bomb explosion in Afghanistan's eastern city of Khost on Sunday.

Afghan security forces have also stepped up attacks against Taliban hideouts to curb the militancy across the war-ravaged country.

The Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a statement on Tuesday that government forces had killed at least a dozen militants during a security operation in eastern Nangarhar Province.

Amin Jan Kochi, a regional Taliban leader, is also among those killed in the security operation. Kochi was known as Taliban’s shadow provincial governor for Laghman Province.

Afghan intelligence officials said the militants had been responsible for death of several army soldiers and security personnel.

US and its NATO allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. But the country is still witnessing bombings, armed clashes and killings.
