China has reportedly deported 20 foreign nationals who had earlier been arrested for watching and spreading “terrorist videos” in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia in the northern part of the country.

The Associated Press cited official Chinese Xinhua News Agency as saying late Saturday that nine Britons, 10 South Africans and one Indian national, who had been detained while on a tour in the northern city of Ordos on July 10, were all deported by Saturday morning.

Zhang Xi, an official in charge of dealing with foreigners in Ordos, said on July 16 that the foreigners were “suspected of watching and spreading violent terrorist videos.”

Eleven of the individuals were reportedly sent back to their countries on July 15; the remaining were deported early Saturday.

Xinhua was cited by the AP as saying that the tourists watched a documentary and that some of them later watched video clips ‘that advocated terrorism.’ Similar footage was also reportedly found on a cellphone belonging to one of the tourists.

The family of one of the arrested tourists said on Saturday that the group had visited the Genghis Khan Mausoleum in Ordos and watched a TV “documentary” about the historical figure “to further their understanding of the region.”

“It can only be assumed that junior officials who made the initial arrest in Inner Mongolia made a mistake, due to perhaps their unfamiliarity of the English language,” a spokesman for the family claimed.

The spokesman, however, failed to comment on the video clips reported to have been watched by the individuals.
