US aviation giant Boeing has issued warning about a possible maintenance flaw of its planes after a passenger jet's landing gear panel fell on a Shanghai suburb following takeoff.

Issuing a statement on Saturday, Boeing urged airlines using its planes to pay more attention to maintenance issues to prevent similar accidents, AFP reported.

According to Boeing’s statement, the metal sheet forming landing gear panel and weighing 130 pounds (60 kilograms), plunged to the ground shortly after Air France Flight 111 took off from Shanghai for Paris last Monday. No one was injured in the incident.

"We've been working real closely with our customers and have provided guidance on how to make any maintenance required," Boeing’s spokesman, Chris Villiers, told AFP.

Noting that Boeing is treating the incident "with utmost concern and urgency," he added, "It does not affect the structural integrity of the landing gear, nor the safety of the flight."

Villiers said the panel was not part of the landing gear structure, but one of the parts that open and close as the landing gear deploys.

Following the Shanghai incident, Boeing issued a service bulletin containing instructions on how to resolve the issue.

According to the bulletin, the problem is related to the fasteners that hold the panel in place.
