Iranian freestyle wrestlers have displayed their skills and strength at the Stepan Sargsyan Cup 2015 in Armenia, and picked up two medals in the sporting event, including one gold.

On Saturday and day one of the competitions in Mika Sport Complex of the Armenian capital, Yerevan, Iran’s 23-year-old Mohammad Hossein Mohammadian downed his Ukrainian opponent Pavlo Oliinyk 2-1 in the last encounter of men’s 97-kilogram weight category and collected the gold medal.

Mohammadian, who had a bye in the first round, overpowered Macedonian wrestler Magomed Gadjinarav 12-10 in the second, before prevailing over Russia’s representative, Evgeny Kolomiets, 7-1 in the quarterfinals.

He then won his bout against American athlete Wynn Michalak 9-3 in the last four, and qualified for the final bout.

In the 65-kilogram division, Iran’s Behnam Ehsanpour won his third-place play-off against a wrestler from Ukraine to take home a bronze medal.

The Stepan Sargsyan Cup 2015, which marks the 20th edition of the tournament, opened in the Armenian capital city of Yerevan on July 18 and wrapped up the following day.

Sargsyan is a former freestyle wrestler for the Soviet Union of Armenian descent. An international tournament dedicated to the 52-year-old athlete takes place in Sargsyan's memory as of 1996.

Wrestlers from several countries, including Armenia, Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Iran and the United States, are competing in this year’s edition.

Iranian freestyle wrestlers are using the international tournament as their tune-up event for the World Championships in Las Vegas, the United States, in September.
