'Israel lobby trying to ruin Iran accord'

The Israel lobby in the US is expending numerous resources to scupper Iran accord, says an ex-US congressional staffer.

The powerful Israel lobby in the United States is expending numerous resources in order to scupper the newly-reached conclusion between the P5+1 and Iran, says former US congressional staffer Rodney Martin.

“The Jewish lobby is spending a lot of resources in the form of television ads and lobbying the Congress” to see that “that this deal is defeated,” Martin told Press TV on Thursday.

“My prediction is the Republican, the recons, who are doing the work of the Jewish Zionist lobby will succeed in scuttling the nuclear deal.”

Martin also said that President Barack Obama “waited too long into his second term, he should have concluded this arrangement very shortly after his reelection when the Republican Party was in disarray.”

“The problem is President Obama and his team don’t have a proper massage and appealing not only to the Senate and to the American people, the Republican opposition are messaging this in a way that they want to renegotiate a better deal,” he noted.

Iran and the P5+1 – the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – reached a conclusion on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry offered a vigorous defense of the deal as he faced tough questioning at a Senate committee hearing. He described the JCPOA as the "only viable option" to a peaceful resolution of Iran’s nuclear issue.

The United States, Israel, and some of their European allies accuse Iran of pursuing a nuclear weapon, an allegation Tehran categorically rejects. Several rounds of sanctions have been imposed on Iran because of its nuclear activities.
