At least three people have lost their lives when a small propeller plane crashed into homes at a residential neighborhood on the western outskirts of the Japanese capital, Tokyo.
The Metropolitan Police Department said two people on board the aircraft and a female resident died on Sunday as the five-seater aircraft went down just southeast of Chofu airport, which mainly serves light planes with an 800-meter-long runway.
The Tokyo Fire Department said five houses and a vehicle were set on fire due to the crash that occurred at around 11 a.m. local time (0200 GMT).
Video footage broadcast on state-run television network, NHK, showed a gutted house and the tail of a light aircraft with firefighters battling fires and trying to rescue people.
On April 14, at least 23 people received minor injuries when a South Korean Asiana Airlines Airbus A320 overran a runway at an airport in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima.
The rest of the passengers and crew members reportedly managed to escape through the plane’s emergency exits.
Officials said 74 passengers and seven crew members were on the airplane, which had taken off at Seoul’s Incheon Airport in South Korea.
