The US administration of President Barack Obama and its allies in the Middle East were responsible for the growth of the ISIL terrorist group in the region, says a political scientist in Los Angeles.
Washington has not been serious about fighting ISIL and is at war with the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad despite statements by senior US officials to the contrary, said Raid Khoury, who is also an activist in the Arab Americans for Syria community organization.
“The United States and its allies in the region and its clients such as Turkey and the Saudi Wahhabi regime, along with its [Persian] Gulf allies have been heavily involved in seeing the rise of ISIS or ISIL in Syria,” Khoury told Press TV on Tuesday.
“If they truly wanted to fight ISIL, then the first step to do is to end all support immediately and close the borders,” he added.
On Monday, the Pentagon announced that the United States is not at war with the Syrian government, but it is only fighting against the terrorist group in the country.
“We are not at war with the Assad regime,” Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said. “The people we are training and equipping are pledged to fight ISIL and only ISIL, so this is not something we view as inviting confrontation with Assad in any way,” he added.
Khoury dismissed the remarks by the Pentagon spokesman, saying “I don’t think the statement by the US government that they are not fighting the Syrian regime, that they are fighting ISIL, can be taken very seriously simply because of their policy over the last four or five years.”
