A member of a NATO military force in Afghanistan has been killed in an attack on the alliance’s base in Kabul as the nation’s military spokesman announced the killing of 115 militants across the country by the national army forces.

In a Saturday statement issued by NATO’s Resolute Support (RS) mission in Afghanistan, the alliance stated the fatal attack on the military facility was waged on Friday night, which also left behind casualties on the militants.

“A coalition facility (Camp Integrity) was attacked at 10:15 pm, 7 August. One Resolute Support service member and two insurgent attackers were killed. We are gathering further information,” said the statement as cited in local press reports.

According to the reports, the attack began with a strong blast in Qasaba area of the capital near the Kabul airport and continued for hours.

The statement, however, did not identify the nationality of the officer killed, saying that RS policy defers casualty identification to the relevant national authorities.

Meanwhile, in a Saturday statement posted on twitter, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi announced that “in past 48 hours, 115 terrorists have been killed, 41 wounded, 5 detained, a number of armament seized and 12 [National Army] soldiers embraced martyrdom.”

The development came in the midst of large-scale military operations against Taliban insurgents across the war-torn nation that were launched after Afghan National Security Forces took full responsibility of security from US-led foreign forces in January 2015.

The US-led military coalition forces had lost 3,485 service members during its 13-year-long combat mission in Afghanistan which came to an end in December 2014. The military invasion of the country began in 2001 with the stated aim of rooting out the ruling Taliban government at the time as well as terrorism across the nation.

After the 13 years, however, terrorism still persists across the country leaving many people dead, injured or displaced, with no apparent end in sight.
