US presidential candidate Donald Trump was dumped from a speaking role to an important gathering of conservative activists on Friday for his criticism of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.

US presidential candidate Donald Trump has been disinvited from speaking at an important gathering of conservative activists for his disparaging remarks about a female Fox News anchor who moderated the first Republican debate.

Trump had been slated to speak on Saturday at a conference in Atlanta, Georgia, that was organized by Red State, an influential conservative group and political blog.

Erick Erickson, the board chairman and editor-in-chief of Red State said Friday he had disinvited Trump from the gathering because of what he described as "demeaning" remarks about Megyn Kelly who was one of three moderators during the Republican debate on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio.

"While I have tried to give him great latitude, his remark about Megyn Kelly was a bridge too far," Erickson said, adding he had invited Kelly, one of Fox's highest profile anchors, to attend his conference in Trump's place.

Trump’s campaign said in a statement that, "This is just another example of weakness through being politically correct. For all of the people who were looking forward to Mr. Trump coming, we will miss you. Blame Erick Erickson, your weak and pathetic leader. We'll be doing another campaign stop at another location.”

The first Republican presidential debate for the 2016 presidential elections took place Thursday night among the top 10 GOP candidates for the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

During the debate, Kelly asked Trump to respond to derogatory statements he had made in the past about women, calling them "fat pigs," "dogs," and "slobs." Trump tried to wave off the question and dismissed Kelly.

The multi-billionaire real estate mogul drew controversy on Friday when he said on CNN that Kelly “had blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever” during the Republican debate.

Several Republican presidential candidates have spoken at the Red State gathering and Trump was scheduled for a special appearance Saturday night.

Trump currently leads the 17 Republican candidates vying to represent their party in the November 2016 presidential election.

He is sustaining his lead among influential Republicans such as former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker much to the surprise of political analysts and the dismay of established Republican leaders.
