Two Egyptian police officers have been killed and three others injured in a roadside bomb attack in North Sinai, Press TV reports.
Those killed in the Sunday blast were identified by the Egyptian Interior Ministry as a police captain and a conscript that served in the investigative department of the el-Arish police station. El-Arish is the capital of North Sinai.
According to police accounts, the explosive device used in the attack was detonated by remote control as the police vehicle passed by.
Police also stated on Sunday that the army had discovered nine explosive devices within the past 24 hours on a roadway regularly used by the Egyptian military forces in North Sinai.
Attacks similar to the one carried out on Sunday are usually claimed by a Takfiri militant group known as the Velayat Sinai (Sinai Province), which has pledged allegiance to the notorious Daesh terrorist network.
Terrorist activity has been rising for nearly two years now in northern Sinai, after former army chief and now President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi led the overthrow of the country's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Hundreds of security personnel and militants have been killed or injured in the operations.
Dozens of civilians have been killed, and hundreds injured or displaced after being caught in the crossfire between the army and the militants.
Sisi's government accuses the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood of being behind the rising wave of terror and unrest gripping the country, including in the Sinai Peninsula.
The Brotherhood denies the charges, and accuses the Sisi government of "sponsoring terror" and of working to "serve Israeli interests" by destroying Sinai and besieging the impoverished Gaza Strip, already suffering from an inhumane illegal blockade from the Israeli regime.
