The protests marking the first anniversary of the shooting death of African American teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer serve as a reminder that the United States is a “failed human rights state” with a racism crisis, a researcher and historian in Washington says.
Brown’s death by officer Darren Wilson shows that “we have a real, racist, human rights crisis in the United States,” said Dr. Randy Short, a member of the Black Autonomy Network Community Organization.
The issue with racism against blacks is not just in relationship with the police, but the larger problem lies with the Anglo-American elite and the Zionists in the US, Short said in an interview with Press TV on Monday.
“They’re crazy, they’re out of control, they have exploited African American people for hundreds of years and this doesn’t change with one protest,” he added.
Brown was shot multiple times and killed last year in Ferguson by Wilson, sparking months of violent protests across the United States.
A year later, the anger is still raw in Ferguson, where more than a thousand people gathered Sunday where Brown was killed.
In November 2014, a predominantly white grand jury--of nine white and three black judges--decided not to indict Wilson for killing Brown.
“Since Michael Brown was killed at least a good thousand or more people have been killed either in detention or directly shot by the police,” Dr. Short said.
A growing number of Americans view racism as a significant problem in the United States and say the country needs to continue making changes to give blacks equal rights with whites, according to a new survey by Gallup.
The poll also shows that Americans' satisfaction with the way blacks are treated has declined to a new low.
The drop in satisfaction is likely the result of a series of high-profile and fatal incidents in the past year involving white police officers and African American citizens.
The unnecessary use of heavy-handed tactics by police as well as the racial profiling of some minorities has become a major concern across the US in recent years.
“As things get worse internationally, you will see more repression against African Americans in particular because what made America was land stolen from Indians (Native Americans) and slave labor stolen from blacks,” Mr. Short noted.
“America needs a regime change, a new constitution, a new way or it’s going to continue to descend and fall and go into a syncline of self-destructive violence, manifested most evidently by the incremental genocide of African Americans,” he added.
