The US state of Illinois has established a comprehensive law to ban police officers from using excessive force, including chokeholds and creating new guidelines on using body cameras and bias-free policing.
Governor Bruce Rauner signed the law on Wednesday to improve police training and address recent controversies over police use of force.
"Today we are taking steps to strengthen the relationship between our law enforcement officers and the public they protect," Rauner said in a statement. "It will have a lasting and positive impact on the people of Illinois."
Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul, a Democrat representing Chicago, sponsored the bill. He said this law will help police officers do their jobs better while removing out abuses.
"This is not just about police officer accountability, but restoring public confidence so police can do their jobs," Raoul said.
Dozens of US states have passed police reform measures following a series of fatal police encounters since last year, but the Illinois' law is one of the broadest and most comprehensive.
Only two other states - Colorado and Connecticut - have approved such wide-ranging law enforcement rules, according to a recent analysis by the Associated Press.
Illinois' law, which takes full effect in January 2016, also requires independent reviews of all police-involved deaths and creates a database to keep track of when a police officer quits while under investigation, so he or she is not hired by another police department.
The legislation also makes clear that police officers cannot prevent another person from filming them while they are performing their duties.
The fatal shooting of an unarmed African-American teenager by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri last year sparked a national debate about police brutality and misconduct.
Michael Brown, 18, was shot multiple times and killed last year in Ferguson by officer Darren Wilson. Protests marking the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of Brown have taken place in Ferguson since Sunday.
