Seoul and Washington are considering the deployment of “strategic United States military assets” to South Korea amid tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said during a briefing on Monday that Washington and Seoul were currently discussing the timing of the deployment, without specifying the assets.

"Keeping close tabs on the crisis situation on the Korean Peninsula, South Korea and the US are flexibly reviewing the timing of the deployment of strategic US military assets," South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said.

Meanwhile, sources have said the deployment may include a US B-52 Stratofortress, equipped with bunker-buster bombs, and a nuclear-powered submarine.

Kim also said that his country’s initial concept against “provocations” by the North was “deterrence.”

He added that any attack by North Korea would be met with powerful counterattacks.

"We will stand with a powerful war readiness position to deter North Korean provocations and, if provoked, will react harshly to the extent that the North Korea would regret it,” he said.

On Sunday, the two Koreas held high-level talks in the Panmunjom village on the de facto border between the neighbors, aimed at decreasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Tensions have been on the rise between the two sides since Seoul blamed Pyongyang for mine explosions that maimed two South Korean border guards on August 4.

The South Korean Defense Ministry has accused North Korean soldiers of sneaking across the border before planting three mines. Pyongyang has denied any involvement in the incident.

The United States has more than 28,000 troops deployed in South Korea, which has remained technically at war with its neighbor since the 1950-1953 Korean War ended in an armistice, instead of a peace treaty.
