Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow has joined the US lawmakers who have voiced support for a nuclear agreement with Iran.
On Monday, the Michigan senator became the latest in a string of American lawmakers, supporting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), reached between Tehran and the global powers in mid-July.
“I must support the agreement,” said Stabenow, a member of the Senate Democrats’ messaging team.
Stabenow’s stance means the administration of President Barack Obama is short of only six more supporters in the US Senate to obviate the pro-Israeli GOP from killing the nuclear accord in the US Congress.
Only two Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer of New York and Robert Menendez of New Jersey, have publicly opposed the deal so far.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said on Sunday that he would back the accord, reached between Iran and the P5+1 – the US, Britain, Russia, China, France, and Germany in the Austrian capital Vienna on July 14.
“I will do everything in my power to ensure that it stands,” Reid said, referring to the agreement.
Obama needs the Democratic senators’ support so that his veto power is not overridden after a possible rejection of the accord by the House of Representatives.
Under the agreement, restrictions will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic.
The Republican Party members, including the 2016 presidential hopefuls, have criticized the outcome of talks with Iran.
