Indian police arrest 6 men in connection with the gang-rape of a teen girl at a hotel in the western city of Jaipur.

Indian police have arrested six men on alleged charges of gang-raping a teenage girl on the promise of a job at a hotel in the western city of Jaipur.

A 17-year-old girl has claimed that she was gang-raped by 11 men at a Jaipur hotel where she had been taken under the pretext of a job by a couple living in her neighborhood at outer Delhi's Mongolpuri area.

Six individuals, including the couple and the hotel manager, have been arrested, police said. The hunt is on for the remaining culprits.

According to a police official, “the girl was in urgent need of employment as her alcoholic father had run the family into heavy debt.”

In her statement to the police, the victim said she was confined to a room at Jaipur's Indraprastha hotel, denied food and repeatedly raped on August 30. She managed to escape her captors the following day and made a formal police complaint when she reached Delhi on September 1. A medical examination has confirmed that the minor was raped.

“Based on her complaint, we have arrested six men and we are studying the CCTV footage from the hotel to nab the rest of the suspects,” a police officer said in Delhi on condition of anonymity.

In another case last week, three men were convicted of gang raping a young Japanese woman in Jaipur, a popular tourist destination, and sentenced to 20 years in jail.

India has toughened punishment for sexual violence since the fatal gang-rape of a student on a Delhi bus in 2012, whose death sparked mass protests as well as domestic and international outrage.
