Europe opposed to new US sanctions against Russia: Analyst

European countries are opposed to US plans to impose new sanctions against Russia, a political commentator says.

European countries are opposed to US plans to impose new economic sanctions against Russia and escalate tensions over the Ukraine conflict, a political commentator in Kentucky says.

“Europe does not want to put new sanctions on Russia,” John Miranda told Press TV in a phone interview on Sunday.

“The main reason that they came to the peace table in Minsk was because Germany and France did not want to escalate the situation with Russia and they wanted peace,” Miranda said.

At a summit in Minsk, Belarus on February 11, 2015, the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France agreed to a package of measures to alleviate the ongoing conflict in the eastern region of Ukraine.

On Saturday, the US warned Russia that sanctions against the country will remain in place until peace accords are fully implemented in Ukraine.

“We are clear that until Minsk is completed, sanctions will not be lifted," US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said in Kiev.

However, Miranda said “the United States sadly is on a totally different narrative” from its European allies, adding that the American officials “don’t want peace.”

On any new sanctions by the US against Russia, he said “Who’s going to put new sanctions?” adding that “the UK is not going to do it, Germany is not going to do it, France is not going to do it.”

He went on to say that “Ukraine is [in] complete chaos, it is the fault of the Zionist government that the United States has helped put in power there, but as far as new sanctions coming from Europe against Russia, that’s total nonsense.”
