‘Iran deal shows US not following AIPAC’

An analyst says the fact that the Iran deal has been successful so far in the US shows Washington is “getting away” from the influence of the AIPAC.

A political analyst says the fact that Senate Democrats could defeat Republicans over the Iran nuclear accord shows that the US is “getting away” from the influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

On Thursday, US Senate Democrats blocked a resolution against the Iran agreement for a third time in a week, sealing a major foreign policy victory for President Barack Obama.

The Republicans failed once again to gather the 60 votes needed for the resolution of disapproval in the 100-member chamber.

The Obama administration gained this resounding victory over its opponents, despite the Israel lobby’s massive campaign to defeat the historic nuclear agreement, reached between Iran and the P5+1 -- the US, Britain, Russia, China, France, and Germany -- in Vienna in mid-July.

“This defeat shows really what the AIPAC could not do this time, it shows their weakness,” Massoud Khodabandeh, Middle East Strategy Consultants,  told Press TV on Friday.

The analyst said that this victory “shows that the core policy of the US is getting away from the influence of AIPAC at least as much as it used to be.”

However, Khodabandeh also said the Republicans are now taking two other steps “to stop the deal, or basically to start a war; one is pushing to give as much weapons as possible to Israelis, so they can attack by themselves without the US and start a war, the other one is to bring the human rights issue in the forefront of the case.”

The US accuses Iran of violating human rights, an allegation which has been always rejected by Tehran.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Khodabandeh said even the “Europeans do not want to go back to 10 years ago, they want to move forward, they want to have,.. negotiations, trades with Iran.”
