US Secretary of State John Kerry has cautioned Israel and the Palestinians to exercise restraint after violent clashes in the Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem).

"Regarding Jerusalem, it absolutely is unacceptable on either side to have to have violence resorted to as a solution," Kerry said Monday at an event at Chile's Congress in Valparaiso.

"And I would caution everybody to be calm, not to escalate the situation and to deal with this in a way that can find quick way back to the full restoration of the status quo,” he added.

"And it is very important to maintain a sense of calm that will minimize the instinct for escalation," Kerry said.

Israel is banning some Palestinians from al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City. Only Israelis, residents, tourists, businesspeople and students studying there will be allowed entry, Israeli police said in a statement Sunday.

The site is Islam’s third holiest after Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and Masjid al-Nabawi in Medina.

Israeli officials said the measure was taken after two Israelis were killed and two others injured during clashes between Palestinians and Israeli settlers in al-Quds on Saturday night.

Fresh clashes erupted Monday in the occupied West Bank and Israeli army shot dead a 13-year-old Palestinian at a refugee camp near Bethlehem.

Abdel Rahman Abdullah, struck in the chest by Israeli fire, was the second Palestinian teenager killed by Israeli soldiers over the past 24 hours.

Israeli security forces have been using live rounds and rubber bullets against Palestinian youths hurling stones and firebombs. Israeli settlers have also attacked Palestinians.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged “a fight to the death” against the Palestinians.
