Reports emerged on Wednesday that major Swedish enterprises are preparing to invest in the Iranian economy as soon as the sanctions against the country are lifted.
Officials from companies like Scania and Ericsson – that had been previously active companies in the Iranian economy – have told Bloomberg that they are ready to return to Iran which they say still is a lucrative market for the Swedish businesses.
“We are ready,” said Hans-Aake Danielsson, the spokesman of Scania. “If and when it takes off, Iran can be a significant market for Scania."
Also, Ericsson spokeswoman Karin Hallstan said the company has had customers in Iran “for over 100 years” and plans to “explore opportunities” with new ones as it monitors developments following the nuclear deal.
The report further said all major multinational companies in Sweden – the so-called ‘Big 10’ – plus some others are interested in getting started in Iran as soon as possible. It added that a major trade delegation will visit Iran, perhaps in December, to evaluate the prospects for investing in the country in a post-sanctions era.
About 200 Swedish investors were in Dubai over Tuesday and Wednesday to learn about opportunities in the region, including in Iran, Bloomberg added.
Apart from Swedish enterprises that were in Dubai, there have been companies from other Scandinavian countries that are also looking into the prospects for investing in Iran. They included the Swiss-Swedish power transformer producer ABB Ltd, and Danish banking group Danske Bank A/S.
