The US media has adopted a “congratulatory” tone on Russia’s air strikes against the Daesh Takfiri terrorists in Syria, an analyst says.
What draws the ire of the US is “the lack of distinction that Russia makes between al-Qaeda terrorists, ISIL and other extremist backed and funded by the US," geopolitical analyst Eric Draitser told Press TV Monday.
He added that Russia has “blocked the US agenda for Syria” and “made regime change in Syria an impossibility.”
"We’ve seen the destruction of a lot of terror infrastructure and the architecture for destabilization put in place by the US and its proxies," Draitser noted. "What the US and the western powers are to do is to demonize Russia and make it seem as if Russia is deliberately and indiscriminately bombing civilians."
Russia’s military operations in Syria have raised concerns in Washington that they target militant units, trained and armed by the Pentagon and CIA, and as a result bolster the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
American warplanes have been conducting airstrikes in Syria since September last year. US officials say the strikes are aimed at ISIL forces, but critics assert that the operations are also directed against infrastructure key to the Syrian government.
Russia, on the other hand, has managed to destroy Takfiris' positions in the war-ravaged Syria since it started launching airstrikes there on September 30.
Russia launched its airstrikes upon a request by Damascus, shortly after the upper house of the Russian parliament gave President Vladimir Putin the mandate to use the air force in the Arab country.
