American voters believe “homegrown” terrorists pose a far greater threat than terrorists coming from other countries, a new poll has found.

According to a national poll released Thursday by Quinnipiac University, 58 percent of Americans think US born terrorists pose the greatest terror threat to their country, while only 17 percent of them see foreign terrorists as such.

“Americans are far more concerned about the threat from within, homegrown terrorists, than they are about someone being welcomed to the US as a refugee and committing an act of terror," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

US President Barack Obama’s plan to bring in 10,000 Syrian refugees to the country over the next year has hit a few roadblocks.

Some state officials say they either oppose accepting any refugees or demand that they be strictly scrutinized as potential security threats.

The United States has resettled only about 1,500 Syrian refugees since 2011, when the conflict began in Syria.

‘Major attack imminent in US’

The poll also found that a total of 83 percent of Americans believe a major terrorist attack against the US mainland is "very likely" or "somewhat likely," in the near future.

The majority of Americans, 61 percent, think that their government’s anti-terror policies have not gone far enough to protect the country, while 27 percent think these policies have gone as far as restricting civil liberties.

A recent federal report revealed that more than 2,000 terror suspects designated as potential terrorists by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have legally purchased weapons in the country.

According to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), between 2004 and 2014,  suspected terrorists on the FBI's consolidated watch list tried to obtain guns from American dealers for a total of 2,233 times, and succeeded in 2,043 of those cases, a whopping 91 percent success.
