Fifteen people have died in an incident where a boat capsized in Egypt’s Nile River north of the capital, Cairo.

The government sources announced on Friday that rescue teams had recovered 15 bodies following the incident in Kafr al-Sheikh.

The statement added that three survivors of the Thursday night accident had been transferred to a hospital for treatment.

The government said the boat, which was unlicensed, was transporting 18 people. The maximum capacity was only seven.

In an earlier incident in July 2015, more than 35 people died when two boats collided in the river. The government pledged to enforce “discipline” on the waterway back then.

The use of loud speakers on boats hired for private ceremonies as well as on passenger ferries were banned following the July accident.

The government also dropped plans to build new berths along the river.

The Nile runs the length of Egypt. Cargo ships, party boats and fishing vessels sail through the waterway.
