There are millions of people worldwide who suffer from dementia, a brain disease that causes a long-term and gradual decrease in the ability to think and remember.
Now, a Virtual Dementia Tour in the UK can help us understand what it feels like to live with the disease. The Tour is designed to take away all the primary senses, allowing participants to experience the troubling states that people with dementia go through every day. Of course, the dementia tour isn’t new.
“People experience everything dementia sufferers go through. We put insoles into their shoes to represent peripheral neuropathy where the nerve endings die in your feet and in your hands," managing director Glynn Knight said.

“It makes people with dementia, elderly people, and especially people with diabetes, walk with what’s known as a ‘shuffling gait’.
“Think about walking across a pebbly beach with no shoes on.
“That’s pretty much what it would feel like. This is why people with dementia walk around with no shoes on, shuffle when they walk and constantly sit down – because they’re in pain.”
The project has been in the US for a decade, and is currently available in 17 countries around the world. It’s been in the UK for two years now. But this is the first time a mobile version is being made available to the public. It is hoped that the tour will be eye-opening for relatives of anyone who is living with the condition.
