Brazilian incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took part in a rally in Sao Paulo on Sunday (October 11) to defend democracy and public education.
From atop a sound truck, the president urged young voters, who made up a large portion of the crowd, to turn out, while also appealing to older citizens, for whom voting is optional after age 70.
Lula da Silva, who trailed Bolsonaro by two percentage points in the first round, promised to redouble efforts on public safety, a top worry for voters.
The event was organized by students and scientific communities to defend public funding for education and research. They called it the tsunami of hope.
