Iranian students have once again accomplished mission impossible despite all odds at international science olympiads, reaping 18 gold medals, up from 11 last year.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Seyyed Reza Hosseini, head of Iran’s Young Scholars Club, announced the news, noting the remarkable accomplishment by brilliant Iranian students demonstrated a marked increase in securing gold medals compared to 11 ones the country’s students had managed to collect last year.
He stressed that such marvelous achievements come despite wartime disruptions that affected in-person classes, laboratory activities and access to international scientific resources.
Referring to the massive success of Iran’s astronomy team, Hosseini said that for three years in a row, Iran managed to rank first in the overall medal count in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) after its five-member team managed to reap five gold medals.
He further noted that during the IOAA competitions, three Iranian students managed to secure the first, second and third places, adding that in the individual contest section, the only medal was also awarded to an Iranian student.
Hosseini went on to say that Iran’s five-member physics team also managed to collect three gold medals and two silver medals in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).
Iran also secured the first place in the experimental section of the IPhO for the first time, breaking a years-long monopoly held by countries such as China and South Korea in this section, he added.
This was Iran’s best achievement in the IPhO during the last 20 years, Hosseini stressed.
The head of Iran’s Young Scholars Club also noted that for the first time, Iran managed to secure a gold medal in the International Science Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), joining the top 15 countries in this field.
“We hope that we can be among the top three countries in the IOAI in three years,” he noted.
According to Hosseini, Iran’s all-female geography team also managed to secure the first place in the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in the team presentation category.
He stressed it is the first time that the Islamic Republic has managed to win a medal in the iGeo.
The head of Iran’s Young Scholars Club lauded such accomplishments as unprecedented in Iran’s history of International Science Olympiads.
In conclusion, Hosseini thanked medalist students, their teachers and their mentors, while highlighting Iran’s growing role in the organization and management of international scientific competitions.
