Police clashed with protesters at Madrid's Complutense University as teachers rallied in the central Puerta del Sol square on Wednesday, marking the start of what they say will be an indefinite strike.
Francisco Martín, the central government's representative in Madrid, told state broadcaster RNE he had requested an "urgent investigation" into the police action against protesting students and workers, saying the images of the clashes were "very harsh."
Nearly half of the region's 65,000 teachers (44.6%) joined the strike, according to the regional government, while Comisiones Obreras, one of Spain's two largest trade unions, put first-day turnout at 70%.
Unions are seeking an extra 600 euros a month, fewer teaching hours, and less students per classroom, and primary school teacher Isabel Sanz said "we live in Madrid – one of the most expensive regions in Spain – and we are the lowest-paid teachers."
