Police use tear gas to disperse protesters in the Colombian city of Popayan after thousands turned out across the country to voice their opposition to the policies of new right-wing President Abelardo de la Espriella.

The demonstrations mark the first show of force by the opposition since De la Espriella took office in August vowing to combat crime and eradicate "narco-terrorists."
