The United States is reportedly weighing sanctions on Lebanese judges involved in handling a case filed against Lebanon’s Ambassador to Washington Nada Hamadeh Moawad over contact with her Israeli counterpart.

Citing an unnamed US official familiar with the matter, The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday that the US State Department has not decided whether to impose the sanctions if the complaint is merely considered or if it proceeds.

Lebanese attorney Hassan Adel Bazzi lodged the complaint with Lebanon’s top public prosecutor against Moawad after a report by the Lebanese outlet Beirut Review said last month that she had contacted Israeli ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter to express sympathy following a car-ramming attack in the occupied West Bank that left his son in critical condition.

The prosecutor referred the complaint to the military judicial authorities for consideration, according to the Beirut Review report.

A State Department spokesperson said it is "embarrassing that a military court is handling a complaint" against the Lebanese ambassador to Washington "for carrying out the policy of their legitimate government and engaging in US-led negotiations."

The spokesperson also criticized the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement and Bazzi, whom it described as “a pro-Hezbollah lawyer”.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese Foreign Ministry rejected reports circulating about the legal proceeding against Moawad as inaccurate, stressing that any judicial measure against public officials requires the explicit approval of the competent minister.

Speaking to the London-based pan-Arab news outlet New Arab, Bazzi said that the complaint raised a legitimate issue requiring judicial scrutiny.

"We have no vindictive objective," he said. "There is an incident that requires investigation."

Bazzi also condemned the US response as interference in Lebanon's judiciary and sovereignty.

Moawad and Leiter met at the US State Department as part of talks on implementing the framework agreement signed between the Tel Aviv regime and Beirut on June 26.

The US-led negotiations have sparked condemnations in Lebanon, particularly as Israel keeps attacking Lebanon and occupying areas there, including territories it has held for years as well as others it seized during the 2023-24 onslaught.

The Israeli regime has killed 8,956 people and injured 30,660 others in its assaults on Lebanon since October 2023, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

The numbers include 4,389 deaths and 12,424 injuries recorded since March 2, when the Israeli military intensified its aggression against Lebanon.
