The Yemeni military has vehemently dismissed as an “outright lie” the Saudi-led coalition’s claim that it had intercepted and destroyed a Yemeni cruise missile over the Medina region in western Saudi Arabia.

Spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said in a brief statement on Thursday that the claim by the military alliance that Yemeni missile units had launched a projectile is “utterly false and unrealistic.”

Saree emphasized that the Yemeni army had not carried out any retaliatory strike against targets deep inside Saudi Arabia as of Thursday noon.

Major General Turki al-Maliki, the spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition battling the Sana’a-based Yemeni government, asserted in a statement on Thursday that a cruise missile was intercepted and destroyed in the Medina region.

The statement, however, did not identify the intended target of the missile, and provided no details on possible casualties or damage.

The Saudi Civil Defense meanwhile lifted earlier warnings it issued for Najran City and Jizan City, saying on its social media account the danger had passed.

On July 20, the Sana’a government announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia in response to "an unjust and oppressive siege" on Yemen for almost 12 years.

Subsequently, the Yemeni armed forces have reported a series of successful missions that have targeted vessels associated with Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed a blockade on Yemen, initiating a comprehensive military offensive that received support in terms of military, political, and logistical assistance from the United States and several Western countries.

Tens of thousands of Yemenis have lost their lives; however, Saudi Arabia has failed to achieve its primary goal of reestablishing a puppet government that served its interests.
