A Palestinian prisoners' advocacy group says Israel is holding Palestinian journalist Bushra al-Taweel for more than two months in solitary confinement and has subjected her to repeated cell raids, beatings, tear gas inhalation, verbal abuse, deprivation of basic necessities, and other forms of mistreatment.
The Palestinian Prisoners' Club (PPC) warned in a statement on Sunday that ongoing harsh detention conditions gravely threaten her safety and well-being.
It noted that Israeli authorities have renewed Taweel’s administrative detention order for an additional four months, at the same time she is being held in solitary confinement.
Administrative detention is a longstanding Israeli policy to hold Palestinians – men, women and children – without charge or trial for six-month periods that may be renewed indefinitely.
The rights group called for an end to her isolation, urgent international intervention, as well as guarantees of her safety and medical care.
The PPC urged international human rights organizations, foremost among them the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to intervene immediately and monitor the conditions of her detention.
Taweel is experiencing dryness in her eyes, skin, and hands, along with numbness in her hands due to handcuffs, according to the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS).
She had also been suffering from scabies before her transfer to solitary confinement, which was marked by severe detention conditions and a lack of basic needs, according to the PPS report.
Her situation is extremely challenging, characterized by inadequate food and no choice but to consume yellowish tap water.
She does not have access to clean clothing or the means to wash them. The bedding is in poor condition and heavily stained, making her feel like she is sleeping on the bare floor, and the blanket is also in poor condition.
Taweel said she was moved from Damon Prison to a solitary confinement section in Ramla Prison without any explanation.
On October 4, she was coerced into signing papers that stated she would be transferred to Damon Prison, but instead, she was taken to solitary confinement at Ohaley Oz Prison in Beersheba, where she currently remains detained.
