A former top US “counterterrorism” official says the results of the 2026 midterm elections showed that the American people “emphatically” reject the illegal US-Israeli war on Iran.
In a post on his X account on Wednesday, Joe Kent urged President Donald Trump to “avert the disaster of a catastrophic escalation.”
“Last night was a referendum on the Iran war. The American people have emphatically rejected it, and the results at the polls confirmed what we’ve been warning about for months.”
Kent, who resigned in March as director of the National Center for Counterterrorism (NCC) over the war against Iran, said Trump had better end the war “now” and refrain from launching any renewed aggression against the Islamic Republic.
“President Trump needs to understand that he still has the option to course correct on Iran. End the war now. Walk away, and commit the rest of his term to improving the lives of the American people."
"Trump still has the power to do the right thing. He can still avert the disaster of a catastrophic escalation. He needs to focus on taking care of his fellow Americans if he has any hope in salvaging his legacy,” he said.
“End the war. Put the American people first.”
Democrats seized full control of Congress on Tuesday, capturing both the Senate and House of Representatives in a stunning nationwide rejection of Trump and the Republican Party.
The results reflected deep public anger over soaring living costs, controversial tariffs, and the war on Iran, which has sent fuel prices skyrocketing and compounded widespread dissatisfaction with an already deeply unpopular president.
Iran also closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to the latest round of US-Israeli aggression, blocking US and allied vessels from navigating the strategic waterway.
The closure sent shockwaves through global energy markets, driving up oil and fuel prices, particularly in the States, and forcing Washington and the International Energy Agency (IEA) to release strategic reserves on several occasions in an effort to ease the supply crunch.
Following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US in June, Tehran reopened the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran’s Armed Forces shut the maritime corridor again after Washington violated the agreement by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports.
