Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., speaks during a news conference, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. On Sunday, July 24, 2016.

A US congresswoman says Democrats, who won majorities in both chambers of Congress in the recent midterm elections, are determined to “stop the illegal war in Iran” when the new Congress convenes in January.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz made the remarks in a post on X on Friday, saying, “Democrats will bring back American values and end the extremism” of “MAGA extremists,” who she said had “tried to break our country and failed.”

MAGA, short for “Make America Great Again,” is the political slogan popularized by President Donald Trump.

“The new Democratic majority in Congress is determined to bring down costs and revive the American Dream,” she wrote. “Trump can be Mr. Veto or Mr. Dealmaker, but either way the days of unchecked corruption will end.”

The Trump administration’s unprovoked war against Iran has also fueled criticism within the president’s own Republican camp, with some prominent figures questioning whether his decision to attack Iran serves American interests or runs counter to his “America First” agenda.

Vice President JD Vance acknowledged on Wednesday that the war had contributed to the Republicans’ historic defeat in the midterm elections. He said the war that began in late February was a key factor behind the Republican Party’s midterm defeat.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, meanwhile, said Trump was steering the United States toward an “Israel-First cliff.”

On Thursday, Senator Chris Van Hollen also pledged to work to bring the war against Iran to an end.

In a post on X, Van Hollen said Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had “started this senseless war” and that Republicans in Congress had “supported it.”

Van Hollen has previously backed efforts to invoke the War Powers Resolution to halt US military involvement in Iran, arguing that the administration should not be allowed to continue the war without congressional authorization.

He also said many voters who supported the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 switched to Democratic candidates in 2026.

Trump has likewise acknowledged that the war contributed to the Republican losses. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he said, “Iran was a piece of it,” while threatening further military action against the country.

The joint US-Israeli aggression against Iran fuelled economic pressure on American households, with disruption to shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz sending global oil and gas prices soaring.

Democrats’ victories in both chambers of Congress have given the party an opportunity to challenge the administration’s policies and push for an end to the war when the new Congress convenes in January.
