US Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has said that the Daesh (ISIL) group “cannot be contained” and the world needs to defeat the terrorists.

"We have to look at ISIS as a leading threat of an international terror network, it cannot be contained, it must be defeated," said Clinton at the Democratic prime-time televised debate in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday.

The former secretary of state said that the United States is not "at war with Islam, we are at war with violent extremism."

The US must have “a resolve that will bring the world together” to root out the kind of radical extremism that motivates terrorist groups like Daesh (ISIL), she noted.

A series of terrorist attacks, claimed by Daesh, in at least six different venues in and around Paris killed 130 people and injured about 350 others on Friday.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley also underscored the importance of defeating Daesh with the help of allies around the Middle East and the world.

Sanders said the US should “rid our planet of this barbarous organization called ISIS,” while O'Malley said "America is at its best when we are standing up to evil in this world."

Sanders also said the US is to blame for the creation of terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and the ISIL.

“The disastrous invasion of Iraq, something I strongly opposed, has unraveled the region completely and led to the rise of al-Qaeda and ISIS,” he said.

The Vermont senator said “the invasion of Iraq led to the level of instability we’re seeing now,” describing it as “one of the worst foreign policy blunders in the history of the United States.”

O'Malley also pointed to the failed Middle East policy under the Obama administration, in which Clinton spent four years as secretary of state. “Libya is a mess. Syria is a mess. Iraq is a mess. Afghanistan is a mess.”

“Our role in the world is not to roam the globe looking for new dictators to topple. Our role in the world is to make ourselves a beacon of hope. Make ourselves stronger at home, but also our role in the world, yes, is also to confront evil when it rises,” he said.

Following the Paris attacks, President Barack Obama described them as “outrageous,” saying this was an attack “on all of humanity and the universal values that we share."

ISIL terrorists, some of whom were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, now control parts of Syria and Iraq. They have been engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control.

The United States and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against purported ISIL positions in Iraq and Syria since last year.
