Iran has condemned Saudi airstrikes on Yemen, particularly those targeting civilian infrastructure and populated areas, saying they violate international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes.
In a statement on Sunday, Iran's Foreign Ministry denounced violations of Yemen's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the continued economic and air blockade imposed on the country, saying such measures were incompatible with international law and Islamic principles.
The ministry specifically condemned airstrikes on November 6 targeting al-Hadhara market in the al-Wazi'iyah district of Ta’izz province, which killed 33 people, including 13 children, and wounded dozens more.
It also denounced attacks on the village of al-Shariyah in the Bani Hushaysh district, east of Sana’a province, which killed over 30 people, including several women and children.
The statement further condemned the targeting of members of Yemen's Al-Masirah television network while they were carrying out their journalistic duties.
The Foreign Ministry said the attacks violated Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of states.
It also described the strikes as breaches of fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and instances of war crimes.
The ministry reiterated Tehran's position that the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen should be brought to an end as soon as possible through dialogue between the parties, based on the roadmap they had previously agreed upon.
It said achieving a settlement required an immediate halt to military attacks, a complete end to the blockade and respect for the Yemeni people's right to self-determination.
The latest escalation in Yemen began after Saudi Arabia bombed Sana'a's international airport in July. The Yemeni Armed Forces responded by attacking Saudi airports, oil facilities and tankers in the Red Sea, and also enforcing a “blockade for blockade” policy.
The conflict traces back to March 2015, when Saudi Arabia and a US-backed coalition launched a sweeping military offensive and blockade on Yemen aimed at reinstalling a favorable regime in Sana'a.
Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have died, but Saudi Arabia has failed to achieve its stated objectives.
